Sitting high up in central Bangkok, the rooftop bar at the Okura Prestige hotel is one of my favourite relaxation spots in the Thai capital. After a day of travelling, I stumbled across Up & Above (thanks to Foursquare) – popular for its friendly staff and free wifi – perfect, I thought!
Up & Above Restaurant and Bar oozes luxury without being too pretentious thanks to some of the friendliest bar staff I’ve ever met. Our server even asked if we wanted a photo and came back later to take one of the sunset for us! Despite the exclusive ambience, I rocked up in a t-shirt and shorts and felt no less welcome than the businessman working on his laptop beside me. This is worth mentioning as some of the other rooftop bars in Bangkok have really strict dress codes (for example, the famous Lebua Sky Bar where they filmed The Hangover Part II) where your flip flops are most definitely not welcome!
For students on a budget, you’ll be pleased to hear that happy hour runs from 5pm – 9pm and complimentary snacks (olives, nuts and wasabi peas) are also provided.
The happy hour menu includes a range of cheap cocktails starting at 125 baht (around £2.40) and beers from just 99 baht (around £1.90). While this isn’t the cheapest place to go for a drink in Thailand, it’s definitely worth a visit for a civilised daytime drinking session when Khao San Road’s questionable alcohol buckets become too much to handle… And let’s be honest, everyone loves a good rooftop bar!
While the indoor bar and restaurant are great, be sure to sneak out to the outside area for super comfy sofas which back on to some spectacular views over Bangkok.
- Don’t miss: A range of tasty mojitos, well mixed and cheaply priced
- Plus points: A great view, no dress code, friendly staff, free snacks, free wifi on request
- Minus points: none!
